Arch2_thumb

Arch Within Arch is my impression of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri.  The 630' tall stainless steel catenary arch, like the Eiffel Tower, can be seen from almost any vantage point in the city. Yet to my eye, it looks somewhat out of place - modern minimalism arbitrarily plopped on the historic riverbank.  Placing it within the brick arches of the subway station created a more harmonious framing that referenced both the old and the new city structures.  When I visited, the arch was surrounded by construction projects.  Access was limited to one winding sidewalk, although at first glance it seemed as though it was completely walled off by equipment and trenches.  Seeing it through the hole in the wall best captured my feelings at the time.

The archival pigment print is 11" x 14" +/- printed by myself in my home studio.  I selected Hahnemuhle Fine Art Photo Rag Pearl, a natural white, 100% cotton, buffered paper with no optical brighteners.  The print is signed and dated.

His CD, En Route, includes 11 songs and features Bo Ayars, Sam Solano, Robert Stragnell, and Matt Farina with a bonus track with Ollie McClay.

Jonathan Smith first played guitar at 4 years old.  After hearing saxophonists Eddie Harris and Robert Hutchens, he was inspired to pursue jazz.  In his early 20‘s he took up tenor saxophone, playing for a couple of years in a Portland jazz quintet. Smith has had the good fortune to meet and learn from many guitar masters, including: Anthony Wilson, Dan Balmer, Bruce Forman, Ron Eschete, John Stowell, Mike Bloomfield, Graham Dechter and Diego Figueiredo. He also recalls a memorable impromptu lesson with the great Bucky Pizzarelli.  Smith cites many influences and inspirations: Charlie Parker, Robert Hutchens, Jimmy Heath, Christine Jensen, Ingrid Jensen, Benny Green, Randy Johnston, Dan Faehnle, Terry Haggerty, Wycliffe Gordon, Alan Jones, and the list goes on...

While building his musical presence he has played in various Portland area venues such as Brasserie Montmartre, Living Room Theaters, Pioneer Square, Tony Starlight’s, Dy’s Broadway Supper Club, The Globe, Terrace Kitchen, Vintner’s Cellar, The Blue Room, West Cafe, Shirley’s Tippy Canoe, Mazza’s, and the Afrique Bistro.  Smith feels privileged to have created music with many truly great musicians. He plays regularly with his organ trio, consisting of Marcus Reynolds on keys, and Jon Huteson on drums.
